I am lucky enough to know two languages, Spanish my first and English my second. I took Italian in college before now I was to learn Portuguese. I am very interested in the language. I feel like if I was such a procrastinator, maybe lazy as well, I would have been flunten by this time in Portuguese.
I speak English but i also speak English in a slang, i speak English differently from someone that lives in California same English same words but sometimes different meaning, and i believe that has to do with the culture and the people of the place. Different cultures together make different sounds, different ways of communication, even different verbal expressions. I have been told before that I have a Brooklyn accent on top of my Spanish accent, so people can tell me apart from the way i speak but one thing i am lucky enough to do is change the way i speaking depending on the people/culture meaning if i am in a professional environment, i will speak professional but if i am in my “hood” i will speak like we all speak and communicate of a more lay back English.
I problem i see that is going on that mean people myself included speak with slangs a lot because of their demographics or culture or style for whatever reason, many black, brown Americans speak black dialect in every setting, for example many black and brown American speak in slangs/ black dialect in the courtroom and are not being understood by the courtroom reports, judge and police many are sent to jail because they are not being understood, the errors that are being committed by the justice system has very bad harmful consequences on the black and brown community, I don’t understand how is it black and brown Americans are arrested at a higher rate and no one can understand them, the system is broken when it comes to minority community.https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/25/us/black-dialect-courtrooms.html
All the Latino countries that speak Spanish have their own version of Spanish and the school Spanish, many countries create their own slangs, we all speak Spanish but many words mean different things. Dominicans are not exception, we have many slangs I sometimes think we need our own dictionary, we can have a whole conversation in slangs and no one will understand but we will understand each other, sometimes i feel like i am an outsider because I don’t know all the slangs sometimes my family makes fun of me in slangs and I don’t get it until I figure out what does it mean.https://youtu.be/dVKIC8NmiNM https://youtu.be/9q87RHYxsIo
I love learning slang from different languages because I feel like that makes you closer with the culture, that makes you one of them. It’s been said that learning a new language after you get older is very difficult but that what makes it fun being able to sometimes be undercover, understanding everything being said and acting like you don’t know a thing.
