Final Personal Reflection Blog [Due. May 14]
In 1,000 words, write a reflective summary of what you learned in COMM 1000 – Survey of Communication Studies. You can use your in-class activities from the earlier part of our class as a guide to help you write this final assignment. You can elaborate on a blog post, a lesson learned, team work, the state of communications field from your perspective, etc.
This is my first year in Brooklyn college, I am a transfer student from Kingsborough community college. When first starting college i was going for culinary arts, after i changed to associates. When i came to Brooklyn college i knew what i wanted to do, i was told that i need this class for my major, not its not part of my major, so i took this class for two reason because i was told i needed it for my major, and i really want to learn to communicate with everyone. I wanted to learn and I still want to learn more on how to communicate with people and not letting them get the best of me, now to communicate with people and how to keep my cool.
In this class i have learned a lot on how to communicate and which is very important for me to have learned, and it made me understand why something i don’t get my point across or get too emotional, and that is raising my voice, in this class i learned that once you raise your voice, you lose an argument because you already have a bad energy, you already showing the other person that they are getting you mad.
Another thing i learned in this class is the difference meaning in culture, i thought that symbols were or are world wide but even if they are that doesn’t mean it will change the meaning for that culture for example in this class i learned that the swastika has different meanings, i just thought it was evil symbol world wide but in Asian countries the swastika is a good fortune symbol
Another thing I learned in this class is about black dialect. I didn’t know that was a thing even though I live in a blaco community, even though I have been to a courtroom and “downtown”. I have always known that the justice system is against people of color but I had no idea that they are not understood not just in the courtroom but also with cops which at times have people’s lives in their hands.in communication is so important that you can understand the message someone message because we create meaning from those messages.
Also I learned the power of communication for example the job of the media which is, giving the public all information and letting the public for itself decide what to believe and what not to believe. In times like those it is very dangerous because you see how the president communicates to the public. Is he spreading poisonous lies and if he is, does the media report on it? Does the public have a right to know? Or is the information too harmful for the public. So should the media or the president continue to spread the lie or should the media or the president stop it or should the media verify everything the president says, communication is complicated and it’s very complex.what i think is that the media should verify everything the president says before they show in on the news or if they do they should fact check it while it’s going on because it not the president will keep spreading wild and monstrutions stories which is not helping the public its harming the public and killing the public,
I also learned in this class how to be more accepting of how to understand that the way people communicate comes from influences, comes from experiences, education, the way you were raised, your culture, your language and so much more. I think communication is so complex. So many different types of communication. I learned communication started with spoken word stories, before writing oral communication was the only form to pass your history to your ancestry. Singing is a form of communication about how oral history started. I also learned that fire was a way of communication that in 150 Chinese soldiers used smoke signals to communicate.
Communication is an everyday function we use, communication is social, symbolic and cultural. When we communicate there is always a feeling behind it that’s why communication is very complicated. A problem also when we communicate is that we are just listening to responses instead of listening to the message and understanding the message when people are speaking we are already thinking of what we are going to say instead of hearing the other person. Also communication creates relationships, language creates different types of relationships and different ways of working with others.
I also learned communication is not easy “if communication is so easy, why do people have misunderstanding, conflicts, arguments, disputes and disagreements”. Communication is not as simple as exchanging messages, communication is characterized by symbols and symbols can have many meanings. A symbol can be a word, a movement, sound, picture, logo and so much more. Communication also requires meaning . Also I learned communication and relationships are interconnected. Any or all communication has an underlying relationship and the relationship can at times influence the communication. There are many different type of communication like verbal communication, non verbal communication, gender communication, children communication, work communication every place has a way or form of communication. Also miscommunication leads to confusion and misunderstanding, the transmission model doesn’t account, the transactional model game of catch.Everyone is very smart and had great things to say which i learned alot from.
After this class I have more compassion, this class has made me question everything and everyone I see myself when I speak thinking about what am I going to say that is not in any way biased. I see myself giving people more chances, I take a second look at a person i dont go for first impressions like I did before. I think percespection is everything so when speaking with someone what you hear might not be what they saying you take what you want to hear. When speaking with someone dont judge, listen before you speak. There’s always a reason why everything happens, everything has a core. This class has changed something in me for the better, there is no going back.
